We are partnered with a well-established, multidisciplinary architecture and engineering firm seeking a Director of Structural & Civil Engineering to lead and grow its Building Design division.
This is a high-impact leadership opportunity for a licensed Professional Engineer who combines strong technical expertise with proven business development, operational management, and team leadership skills. The successful candidate will be responsible for driving strategic growth, managing departmental performance, mentoring staff, and strengthening client relationships throughout New York State.

What You'll Be Doing
Division Leadership & Growth
- Lead and grow the Structural and Civil Engineering division across multiple office locations
- Develop and maintain relationships with key clients, industry partners, and consultants
- Identify and pursue strategic business opportunities within public and private sector markets
- Collaborate with executive leadership to establish and execute short and long-term growth strategies
- Represent the firm at industry events, conferences, and networking functions
Financial & Operational Management
- Support annual budgeting and financial planning efforts
- Monitor departmental backlog, utilization, profitability, and staffing levels
- Identify performance trends and implement corrective actions when necessary
- Assist in establishing financial targets and growth objectives
- Oversee project performance and resource allocation across the division
- Ensure accountability for timesheet reporting, billing activities, and operational procedures
Team Leadership & Development
- Lead, mentor, and develop Team Leaders and engineering staff
- Conduct annual performance reviews and professional development planning
- Establish departmental goals and hold staff accountable for performance expectations
- Facilitate regular division meetings and cross-office collaboration initiatives
- Support recruiting efforts including resume reviews, interviews, hiring decisions, and onboarding
- Develop succession planning and long-term staffing strategies
Technical Excellence & Quality
- Support the development and implementation of engineering standards and best practices
- Champion QA/QC procedures across all projects
- Provide technical guidance and oversight on major projects and client initiatives
- Act as a senior resource for complex engineering and project-related challenges
- Promote continuous improvement through training and professional development programs
What We're Looking For
- Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering
- Professional Engineer (PE) license in New York State required
- 15+ years of Structural Engineering or Civil/Site Engineering experience
- 5+ years of leadership experience managing engineering teams with P&L responsibility
- Proven experience developing client relationships and generating new business
- Strong background delivering projects for:
- State agencies (DASNY, OGS, SUCF)
- Healthcare facilities
- Higher education institutions
- K-12 school districts
- Municipal clients
- Experience managing multidisciplinary project teams
- Excellent leadership, communication, and business development skills
- Valid driver's license and willingness to travel throughout New York State
Preferred Qualifications
- CPESC certification
- LEED AP accreditation
- ENV SP certification
- Experience leading multi-office engineering operations
